What is a genuine ID?
Real ID is a heightened security driver's license or state identification card that meets federal standards. The Real ID Act was passed in 2005 following the September 11 attacks. It obliges states to comply with certain requirements when issuing or renewing drivers licenses and identification cards. The purpose of the law is to create an additional secure and reliable form of identification that can be used by air travelers, law enforcement personnel, and also to gain access to secure government facilities.

The first step is to visit a Secretary of State Driver Services facility in person to fill out your application along with the required documents. You will be required to provide evidence of identity, date of birth, U.S. Citizenship or permanent residency with a valid ID picture, two proofs of residency, and a fee of $28 (see Fee Chart).
